NEW
PROMOTION & PLACEMENT MANDATES WORKSHOPS
Moving 3rd
Graders to Grade Level Performance in
Reading
As you
are aware, soon schools will be receiving third
graders’ reading CRCT scores and will begin
implementing the new promotion and placement
mandates of Georgia law and State Board of
Education rule. All third grade students who do
not score at least 300 on the Reading CRCT test
must be provided accelerated, differentiated,
and/or additional instruction to move the student
to grade level performance. If, when re-tested,
these students do not score 300 or above, schools
must continue to provide accelerated,
differentiated, and/or additional instruction
designed to move students to grade level by the
end of the next school year whether the students
are promoted or retained.
These
two Workshops – PROMOTION & PLACEMENT
INSTRUCTIONAL PLANS and IMPLEMENTING EIP UNDER NEW
PROMOTION & PLACEMENT MANDATES - are designed to
assist principals, assistant principals,
instructional lead teachers, and third and fourth
grade teachers in meeting the new mandates.
June 22
The
June 22nd Workshop will focus on analyzing third
grade CRCT reading scores and designing strategies
to teach students the essential QCC content
standards that they have not mastered. The
Workshop will emphasize the design of “…
accelerated, differentiated, and additional
instruction as needed to perform at grade level by
the conclusion of the subsequent school year….”
Additionally, the workshop will aid participants
in developing “continuous assessments…to monitor
the progress of the student.”
Using
the Georgia Learning Connections (GLC) website,
participants will analyze QCC content standards,
domains, and correlations and explore the GLC
Teacher Resource Center, lesson plans, activities,
web resources, and assessment correlations. Also,
participants will explore the on-line CRCT to
develop assessments.
At the
end of the Workshop participants will work in
teams on a Case Study. Each team will analyze an
actual 3rd grader’s CRCT reading scores and
determine the QCC content standards which were not
mastered and which of those content standards are
essential for the student to master. The team
will design accelerated, differentiated, and/or
additional instruction strategies for the student
for the 3rd grade if the student is to be retained
and for the 4th grade if the student is to
be promoted. Emphasis will be on providing
instruction which will move the student to grade
level performance by the end of the school year,
whether the student is retained or promoted.
Additionally, the team will design assessments to
determine student progress throughout the school
year.
June 23
The
June 23rd Workshop will assist central office
administrators, principals, and assistant
principals in designing EIP classrooms for third
grade students who score below grade level on the
CRCT retest and are retained in the third grade
and those who are promoted to the fourth grade.
The Workshop will review possible models for
transition classes and for grouping students.
Scientifically Based Research in Reading will be
emphasized. Additionally, participants will
review a process to configure and schedule
students into classrooms to maximize funding.
Steps
in designing a district and school EIP
implementation plan which addresses students who
perform below grade level will be explored with
emphasis on meeting the needs of ESOL and special
needs students. The faculty will address
important steps for administrators to take in
order to improve the performance of students and
teachers. Topics include:
Conducting classroom walk-through,
Observing and working in classrooms (What should
the administrator see?),
Participating with teachers in discussions and
problem-solving regarding curriculum, instruction,
and assessment, and
Giving
constructive feedback to teachers regarding
curriculum alignment, pacing, and effective
instructional practices.
